We had been exploring/living in Indonesia for 3 months but had left Lombok and it’s 3 paradise islands until last. To say we were excited about its white sand and crystal clear water was an understatement.
Lombok is Bali’s less explored neighbour and the 3 main Gili islands are just off the coast of Lombok: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. We decided to spend most of our days on Gili Air seeing as it’s the island that has a good balance between liveliness and tranquillity.
At this point, we had spent 8 months in Asia so we weren’t strangers to a bit of heat but my goodness, the Gili sun is INTENSE. Therefore you want to book a good hotel – with AC – where you can escape from the mid-day sun.
We stayed at the Grand Sunset Hotel for a couple of days and couldn’t have been happier.
Grand Sunset Hotel is located on the North-west side of Gili Air which is much quieter compared to the east and provides a nice view of Gili Meno. As the name suggests, it’s also where you can watch the beautiful sunsets. The hotel is set on the beach along with its restaurant so you pretty much have everything you need in very close proximity. However, Gili Air is tiny so you can get anywhere on the island in no time.
Grand Sunset has created a very tranquil environment leaving you surrounded by towering palms, greenery and flowers. Everything you would expect to see from a tropical getaway advert.
All rooms come with a gorgeous open-air bathroom that features a rain shower and stone sink. Along with environmentally-friendly soap and shampoo. The bathroom really gives the best island escape vibes.
The pool isn’t huge yet it was always quiet during our visit which we obviously loved. Surrounding the pool there are few sun loungers with a view of the on-site restaurant, the many beach sun loungers and the ocean. As mentioned, there are plenty of sun loungers right on the beach if you’re more of a beach fan. A little note: most of the beaches on the Gili islands are more broken coral then sand, so if you’re looking for a quick dip to cool off, be careful, or, opt for the pool!
The Grand Sunset offers a complimentary breakfast for their guests at the on-site restaurant, Scratch (served from 7am – 10am). Likewise, feel free to enjoy your complimentary meal in your Room! They have a brilliant range of breakfast meals that you can enjoy with views of Gili’s perfect, turquoise water. The pancakes and breakfast tacos were definitely our favourites. Each breakfast option comes with tea/coffee, fresh juice and a fruit salad so you’ll definitely start the day right at the Grand Sunset.
Breakfast is important but you can’t go to a tropical island and not have a cocktail! As with most resorts on the Gilis, Grand Sunset offers a large collection of your favourite cocktails at an affordable price. That said, if you’re watching your budget closely, head to the restaurant from 5pm – 7pm for their Happy Hour, where drink prices are even more realistic for us budget watchers!
Plus, if you time it right, every Tuesday at 7pm they offer live music from their local band and have a live fire show. Luckily for us, we arrived on Tuesday, so took full advantage of their Happy Hour deals and stayed to watch the fire show. It’s a must!
If you’re anything like us, we get very restless very quickly. Luckily, the hotel has an onsite pool table and table tennis for you to use free of charge (we must have played about 20 games of pool).
Conversely, If you’re looking for a bit more adventure, they also have an onsite diving company suitable for all abilities, and offer to set up other Gili activities such as paddle boarding, kayaking, horse riding and a lot more!
If you’re looking for a relaxing island getaway then this is the place to do it. Grand Sunset has the perfect level of onsite & island activity, whether you want to dive, snorkel or chill by the pool. Plus, being on the North West side of the island takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the harbour. You’ll also find a lot of non-hotel guests coming to Scratch for dinner, drinks and the evening entertainment. Which means they’re coming for a reason.
All-in-all, a highly recommended stay for tropical & relaxing vibes!
